Seawater and brackish water desalination has recently become a new water source for many coastal cities which lack fresh water supply or suffer from seawater intrusion. Due to the recent breakthrough in energy technology, reverse osmosis (RO) has replaced distillation as the most popular desalination method. Build-up of particles over the surface of the RO membrane can greatly reduce the performance of RO process, which may lead to higher operating cost and lower plant productivity, or even cause the whole system to break down.
